Great room, atmosphere and staff. Recommended
Nothing
Staff very friendly and helpful. Location great.
Security lights all night...need blackout blinds/ curtains.
Breakfast was good, but there was no choice with the cooked breakfast. It is a lovely characterful pub, but the accommodation needs attention and could be made really nice with a little effort. Plenty of plug sockets in the bedroom.
Cleanliness: Bathroom - There was urine around the base of the toilet pedestal sealant, the basin light did not work, the basin mixer tap moved around and the taps were very hard to turn completely off and on and some tiles around the bath were cracked through. There was also black mould around the taps in the basin and bath taps and seals and red goo on the back of the door, which I had to wipe off. Dirty finger marks on the walls. Bathroom door lintel was extremely low, so not good for anyone over 6’. Bedrooms - Some surfaces in the bedrooms were not clean and we noticed that the toys in the adjoining children’s room had obvious substances (?food) stuck onto them. There was only one tea bag, though there were plenty of coffee sachets & milk pots provided in the room. Luckily I had brought my own. The bed was only a double, though there was room for a king size, and the mattress was so uncomfortable that we had to put the duvets from the bunk bed under the bottom sheet and it was noted that there were no mattress or pillow protectors. Positioning of mirror in bedroom did not give sufficiently light to apply makeup well. Accommodation could be made 5* with a little effort.
The place was very small dirty broken electricity sockets no wardrobe staff and management weren't bothered no apology wouldn't stay there
When we ask the manager for another room and explain there was no wardrobes he said what do you expect it's a pig stye that's what they used to be
Location was excellent
Nothing to dislike
Loved that the room had its own front door. Modern and compact, perfect for a couples short stay.
Great location and friendly staff
Nice location and great pub. Staff were friendly and evening meals were excellent.
Nothing
Food and drink reasonably priced
Location on top of steep hill. Had to get bus back to property.
Nice room in separate block to pub. Quiet location. 10-15 minute walk into town downhill. Bus stop right outside. Freindly people and nice food at pub. Great views
Room could have been a bit cleaner. Needs a bit of updating. Long uphill walk back
Very good evening meal. Excellent value or money.
Rom was basic. Furniture 'tired'/damaged. Extractor fan in bathroom.not working. No bulb in overhead sink light. Throw on bedcwas old and studied. Cobwebs on ceiling. Stains on roller blind.

Good place to stay as an overnight stop between north and south or if travelling with your dog. Or for longer to explore the Peaks. Located at the top of Matlock town. Very steep hills - just to be aware. The rooms are old stables converted into seperate rooms at the back of the pub. Quiet and private with a nice bit of space outside to sit . Big car park, free. Pub next door! And pub garden. Which wasn’t noisy at all. Own bathroom and kettle with TV - very basic standard, no luxury but good value for money. Second time I’ve stayed there and will again. The cooked breakfast was useful - it’s ten pounds extra- but on reflection we should have explored the many lovely cafes down the hill instead. The cappuccino was clearly from a sachet mix, just so you know if you are fussy! They’d be better off just buying a cafetière and not offering cappuccino at all, I reckon. Anyway overall it’s a good place to stay with a pet, they also have a wheelchair accessible room and it’s convenient for exploring around Matlock if you don’t mind the hill. A good overnight stopping point if you don’t want to spend a lot and just need a place to sleep.
Compared to when I last stayed a few years ago, the rooms could do with a lick of paint and a bit of updating. Especially the bathroom. The breakfast was very average. The coffee was bad, sorry to say…those sachets…! Couldn’t drink it. The younger bar staff were helpful and friendly but the older couple who seem to run it don’t crack a smile at all. So that was fun at breakfast time when it was just us and them….
Individual rooms in the grounds so no bar chatter noise. Excellent food and the two main deal for £18 was great value as the meal was not compromised by the price and the breakfast was excellent too.
Walking to town was difficult due to the location being at the top of a very steep hill. You need transport or taxi. No iron, hair dryer or toilet brush supplied and could do with a few more coat hangers
Lovely place with beautiful flowers
Rooms were dated, beds werent exactly comfortable, and they could've been alot cleaner. Pub food was only available until 1930
pub side was very good as was the food
duvet for summer was far too thick would recommend getting a summer 4.5 tog, and always put a and servicing the room would be good we were there 3 nights and no came in spare toilet roll in the room also breakfast could be served until 9am we never had breakfast there because it was too early
Everything.
Nothing.
Great food
Quiet clean room and very comfy bed.
NA
Location, friendly staff, tidy comfortable rooms. Adequate for a weekend stay. Quiet situation and only 10 minute walk to the town centre
Bit of dust here or there and a few cobwebs but nothing to worry about
Quiret
To far away from Matlock bath bath room 2 small
The location was spot on
Curtains were not black out so could still see light from the lamp post in bed and couldn't bolt the door shut
The bedroom was spacious and clean in a separate building at the rear of the main pub. Large carpark
Checked in at 6 p.m. went in the bar at 7 p.m had a drink . When I asked to order food at 7.30p.m. Was told the kitchen had just closed. Menu stated food served until 8 p.m. the barman could have told us at check in or when I went to the bar the kitchen would be closing soon. The pub is not remote but there is no where else to get food in the local area. Also a Greene King pub so I expect a chain pub to stick to displayed food times
Good location
We arrived at 6.30 and wanted some food but were told the kitchen had shut early
The location is great with lovely veiws.
The room needed a clean as there was a lot of dust on the beams and light fittings .
The property was good. The staff are really lovely and evening meal was exceptional.
The room was immaculate, very good value for money, would definitely return
Great location, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere. Short walk to the lumsdale waterfall
Les tables dehors, le calme
Un peu loin du centre ville, pas de restauration le dimanche
Nice place to be the hosts where great locals lovely
Nothing
The flowers on the front of the property
There was a unpleasant smell in the bathroom
Welcoming staff, good food & drink, nice spacious rooms

Location always a plus. Stayed here a few times now, will always come back. Staff nice and pub, food and drink always good
Only issue was the ceiling light in kids room had blown. Not an issue, just plugged a lamp in (sorry, forgot to mention on site). Other than that, just the light in the courtyard outside was quite bright all night and curtains not that thick. Not the biggest issue in the world but "light sleeper kids" are a pain. Great as always though, hope to see you again soon
Breakfast was really good.
No privacy in the room, one big window. ( curtain in the room covered window). Sink really small got problem to fill the kettle. No soap in the bathroom, no hairdryer.
Everything
garden
food was poor
Friendly, nice room, great parking.
Beautiful old building well kept
Bit tired.needs a spruce up
Just a very good place friendly staff very welcoming
Could not find fault
Good value for money, well located, friendly staff
The pub.location.
A long walk to the town centre.
Great price . Nice pub,great food .
Bed was uncomfortable
Location to friends we came to visit having on site parking was a bonus
Nothing
Lovely newly renovated rooms. Beautiful views. Good value compared to other places to stay in the area.
We were in room one which is ground level and only has patio doors, no windows, so it was very hot over night and there was no fan in the room and no option to borrow one.
It was a perfect setting. The facilities were excellent especially since we had our dog with us. There was an extensive menu and the meals were great value. The staff were extremely pleasant and I would recommend this place to all my friends and family
There was nothing to dislike
Good location, easy parking and dog friendly. Very pretty garden/terrace, lots of flowers. Fairly quiet at night. Traditional fried breakfast, but not much of an option, the continental breakfast, I was told, only consisted of a Danish pastry. No chance of fresh fruit or yoghurt. Staff very friendly and helpful.
I would have to say that the room was shabby, no curtains, although there was a curtain rod with a filial missing. Window blinds were broken and didn't close properly. Bedside table very worn. Mattress was OK, but definitely at end of its life, I could feel some springs beginning to poke through. Fleece covering bed looking very worn, maybe it was for the dog? Water in sink took an age to drain. Pity there wasn't a healthier option for breakfast, like fruit and yoghurt.
We stayed over in advance of an event at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and enjoyed our stay very much. Great location, nice room, excellent bar and lovely breakfast. Recommended.
Nothing to speak of.
Brilliant location for where we were going the following day. The staff were really welcoming. Good choice of beers/lager
Nothing
Bed was comfortable and room was adequate
Fan was thick with dust, broken tiles around bath, could do with redecorating. Fan on off all night from pub area.
Been many times lovely hotel welcoming dogs We had a meal and it was excellent room comfortable
Everything was great just didn't like the stairs this time Always been on the ground floor
Staff behind the bar were helpful and the beds were clean and comfortable. There was a portable fan in the room (much appreciated due to temperature during our stay), tea/coffee making, and a small TV.
The room was quite dark, and smelt quite musty (or possibly faintly of dog?), but there were 2 small windows you could open. Bathroom was tiny and shower not very powerful. We paid extra for breakfast and I don't think it was worth £10; very basic. I would rather pay a bit more and go to a cafe. Not really a complaint, more something to note, the pub is at the top of a long and steep hill that you need to walk down to get into town.
The location
Friendly helpful staff
Good accommodation very clean.
Service poor staff not interested food terrible.
Smart rooms nice and breakfast nice staff
The walk back from Matlock centre
The friendly staff
Nothing
The accommodation was away from the pub which was great. Bright airy room and comfortable bed. Easy to find and parking on site.
There was an air conditioning unit outside which was noisy and kept going off throughout the night. Breakfast was a bit expensive but tasted nice.
Great pub, excellent food, helpful staff.
The room was what you would expect for the price paid, it was generally very clean but the nooks and crannies needed to be cleaned
The evening staff were chatty.
The matress and pillows were so uncomfortable, at times in the night we felt as if we were falling out of the bed. At breakfast i asked for white toast and was told there was not any, we were not asked how or what we would like for breakfast we were just bought it to the table. The breakfast was swimming in fat not nice at all. We were not asked how the food was. Overall not a good stay.
The accomodation was at the side of the pub rather than above it. They were quiet, clean and comfortable. Lovely old pub with a fab view. Not too far from Matlock in car, and about 20 minutes on foot. Prepare for a steep uphill walk or catch a bus. The staff were very accommodating to this with individual health needs. The price, quality and portion size of food was very good.
Times for serving food limited in the evening if you like to eat after 6.30 pm, it would be good to have cobs fir salevafter the kitchen closes. The breakfast was very good but it would have been even better to have yoghurt and fruit too.
The food was excellent. The staff were very attentive and helpful.
Nothing.
It’s a old property with character the views where amazing the staff very friendly
Nothing
Breakfast good. Friendly and efficient service. Location near to venue.we were attending. Spacious clean room
Didn't have decaf tea or coffee so only had juice at breakfast and didn't have a drink in the room due to only caffeinated drinks. Dinner menu looked varied and would have eaten there Sunday evening but they didn't serve meals Sunday night so had to find a meal in town.
Very well appointed room. Easy check in and out.
Excellent Beer and food. Friendly staff and locals. Would stay there again
Nothing
The room was tired and needed some refurbishment .
Good room, and breakfast great location
Nothing
Easy check in ,good food and clean, comfortable accommodation. Plenty of free parking.
Can't think of anything.
Friendly staff great location would recommend
Location was perfect, meals were excellent and good value Great atmosphere in pub Heating was excellent and the heated towel rail was always on
The room we were in was newly furnished but most impracticable room ever. No drawers at all or cupboards had patio doors so anyone could see the whole room.
Lovely staff, nothing was too much trouble & food was excellent
If being very picky bed could do with a thicker matress
Breakfast was separate but good. The room was a little noisy with the window open. We parked under a tree and got badly shat on by pigeons. Maybe they should warn others.
The bar staff was very polite and well mannered and food was amazing
No wardrobe in the room and shower wasn't the best and poor lighting
Separate rooms from the pub so very quiet
It’s a walk into matlock so not for the faint hearted but we and the dog enjoyed it ( but did get the bus back and it stops outside the pub)
Nice large room, clean with all amenities. A little tired perhaps but it didn’t detract. The pup looked lovely if you want to stay for a meal or drink
Rome was a little tired perhaps, but not too bad!
Only stayed one night but had a great walk to the waterfall. Great meal in the pub and the staff were friendly.
Room could have been cleaner, for example there was dust behind the beds on the skirting board; a few spiders and windowsill not cleaned.
Breakfast was very nice, simply served on a plate though, no questions asked. Prompt.
Good food, prompt service. The rooms were very nice. Very good breakfast.
No decaf coffee.
The location was great, will definitely visit again. We didn't have a breakfast but our evening meal was lovely.
There is nothing I would of changed.
The pub & Food was very good . The staff were friendly.
The bathroom although facilities were clean there was not any form of soap ( first time in years I have been anywhere without any) I had to pick up hair from the floor & walls & skirting grubby in both rooms. The bed was uncomfortable as every time my partner/myself moved we both moved. The only place to sit was the bed! Very dark room (no9) & small! Disappointed but I suppose for the price it would be adequate. I’m sorry but I do like a nice room etc.
The pub itself was a lovely place, traditional and not too expensive for drinks. The meals were wonderful.
The room was small and had no wardrobe, i.e. nowhere at all to hang anything, no coat hooks. They need to swap the 'bookcase-type' unit for a wardrobe. The bathroom was very small also and difficult to shower, get a shave etc. On booking we were not advised that the hotel was on top of a very steep hill.
Convenient location for where we needed to be, free parking, easy to find
No blind on the skylight, and terrible blinds/curtains on the other windows meaning in June we were woken by sunrise at around 4:30am. Incredibly basic furniture with zero character. Shower is very small. Threadbare carpets.
Friendly, and the rooms being separate from the pub.
Given the low price, I wasn't expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were very nice and the evening meal was delicious. My room was in a converted outbuilding and while it was quite basic, it had everything I needed for a comfortable night's stay.
The bathroom had a few insects that could have been hoovered up. Also, I would have liked glasses for drinking water rather than just two mugs.
Close to shops, walkable going down hill, steep coming back, friendly very helpful staff, rooms comfy and quiet, in separate buildings to pub but only a few steps away.
